Buffs No. 17 hold Falcons back for 3-2 win
SEATTLE- The No. 17 West Texas A&M men’s soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to defeat the Seattle Pacific Falcons for their first victory of the season. The Buffs improve to 1-0-2 this season while the Falcons are down to 0-1-2.
The action between WT and Seattle Pacific began quickly when the Buffs recorded the first shot at the six-minute mark. The Buffs repelled the Falcon’s attack as Seattle Pacific recorded its first shot on goal in the 13e minute on a penalty. After the penalty, the Falcons held a 1-0 lead. Seattle Pacific looked to head into halftime with a lead until Anthony Perea scored from a penalty to tie the game in the 40e minute. Despite their tie, the Buffs held a 15-4 shooting advantage.
In the second half, both teams continued to exchange attacking chances but neither team was able to take the lead. With just under 30 minutes to play, Payne McKiver play Giancarlo Saldana in the box. On a solid right-footed shot, Saldana slotted the ball into the top left corner of the goal to give the Buffs their first lead of the night. WT extended their lead a few minutes later Denis Herrera free kick. Herrera, taking the kick from a sharp angle outside the box, sent the ball over the Falcons’ wall, pushing the lead to two goals.
Seattle Pacific tried to mount a comeback in the final minutes. Helped by a foul from WT in the box, the Falcons halved the lead on their second penalty of the night. As the pressure mounted, Alphonse Aragon made his last save of the evening with a minute and a half to go.
The Buffs finished the night with 22 shots, eight of them on target, while the Falcons fired five of their 12 shots on goal.
The Buffs return to the Pacific Northwest for a pair of games in Nampa, Idaho. WT takes on Chaminade at 6:30 p.m. at the Johnson Sports Center on the Northwest Nazarene campus.
