BYU Men’s Hoops Release Preseason Schedule | News, Sports, Jobs
San Jose State to LSU Transfer Seneca Knight has been in Provo for about a month, but has already been impressed with the support other sports (volleyball, soccer, and soccer) are receiving from Cougar Nation.
Knight posted on social media about his experiences attending games on campus and said he was looking forward to playing at the Marriott Center.
The school released the men’s basketball non-conference schedule on Tuesday. Knight and his teammates will have plenty of chances to impress their fans against a very difficult and challenging squad roster.
“It will definitely be exciting to play against teams like Oregon, San Diego State and Utah, but I’m really excited to play every game,” said Knight. “I’ve never played for BYU before so I’m just excited to go to war with the guys on the team and the coaches and get to represent the BYU jersey.”
The West Coast conference schedule was announced last month, but it took a little longer to complete the non-conference list, which includes an exhibition match and 15 other counters.
“I’m super excited for the schedule to be released,” said BYU coach Mark Pope. “It’s really intimidating at the start and at the end and the middle is really super tough. I like where we are with the Quad 1 and Quad 2 games being projected. It is the most difficult program we have had here in my three years. It’s a good platform for us to go and see what we’re made of and how we can improve every day.
The Cougars open the season Nov. 4 at the exhibition against Colorado Christian before officially opening the 2021-22 schedule with Cleveland State on Nov. 9, the first time both teams have played in men’s basketball.
There are five clashes in the state, including Utah on November 27, December 1 in Utah Valley, December 8 at the Marriott Center against Utah State, December 18 at Weber State, and December 29 against Westminster.
BYU has planned other intriguing games, including a home meet with San Diego State on November 12 in Oregon during the Phil Knight Invitational on November 16, against Creighton in South Dakota on December 11 and the Diamond Head. Classic on December 22. -25.
Cleveland State, Texas Southern, San Diego State, Utah State, Oregon and Creighton all won places in last year’s NCAA tournament.
The WCC game kicks off on January 1 in Portland, followed by home games against Pacific and Saint Mary’s on January 6 and 8, respectively.
Assistant coach Nick Robinson, who is leading the planning efforts, said the Cougars are expected to play ten Quad 1 games and 62 percent of their schedule is with Quad 1 and Quad 2 teams. Last year , that number was 64 percent.
He added that bringing good teams to the Marriott Center is always the real challenge.
“As our team has proven night after night, we can compete with anyone in the country,” said Robinson. “We finished in the top 25 two seasons. The desire of the teams to come to the Marriott Center, especially with the ROC and 19,000 fans, gave us an exciting place to play. We are doing everything we can to get great teams here at the Marriott Center. “
The best teams coming to Provo this winter include San Diego State (23-5, MWC regular season champion, NCAA No.6 seed), Cleveland State (19-8, Horizon League co-champion , No. 15 seed in NCAA) and Utah State (20-9, MWC tournament champions, No. 11 seed in NCAA).
Last season, the Cougars posted a 20-7 overall record, finishing second behind Gonzaga, both in the regular season and at the WCC tournament. BYU fell to UCLA in the NCAA second round and the Bruins advanced to the Final Four.
Top scorer Alex Barcello has chosen to return for the extra year granted by the NCAA due to COVID-19, and is joined by second-year forward Caleb Lohner. The Cougars have also signed a pair of transfers – Milwaukee’s Te’Jon Lucas and LSU’s Seneca Knight – that should have an immediate impact.
