Fijian rugby sevens duo to join Cowboys for 2022 season

A Tokyo Olympic gold medalist and another Fijian rugby sevens star are set to join the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys for the 2022 NRL season.

Iosefo Masikau and Taniela Sadrugu will arrive in North Queensland for the preseason in November and train full-time alongside the NRL Cowboys squad for the duration of the 2022 season.

Masikau played for Fiji in their gold medal campaign at the Tokyo Olympics in July, scoring a try in their group opener against Japan.

The 23-year-old is posing as a versatile outside full-back in his transition to the rugby league and will spend time training at the wing, center and back.

Sadrugu has played most of his rugby career as a flanker and will be trained as a striker after joining the Cowboys.

Both players got a taste of North Queensland life as members of the Fijian squad for the recent Oceania Sevens in Townsville.

Masikau and Sadrugu join the Cowboys on Train and Replacement contracts, which allows them to train alongside the Cowboys NRL team. After the preseason, both players will be assigned to one of the Cowboys’ three starting clubs in the Queensland Cup, but will continue to train alongside the NRL team from North Queensland in the midst of week.

“Iosefo is a very skillful player who can handle any position in the last five,” said Cowboys scouting director Dane Campbell.

“He has shown a high level of athleticism and is willing to defend, which we are sure will transfer well to the rugby league.

“Taniela is a very tough competitor who loves collisions and will be trained as both an intermediate and forward striker.

“He has good speed and is very popular with us in the rugby sevens circles so we can’t wait to see him grow and develop his game with the Cowboys.”
