LEAVING the disappointment of missing the podium in the Dhule competition, the city’s up-and-coming paddler Jennifer Varghese won the bronze medal at the 83rd Maharashtra State Table Tennis Championship in Nashik . A competitor in the Open Women category, Jennifer, all 13, made her mark and secured third place in the recently concluded four-day state meet. After missing a podium in the U-19 group, Jennifer made sure not to slip this time. In Dhule, Jennifer had competed in three age categories but failed to win a single medal after losing close matches. However, she left all the disappointments behind and the Center Point school, Katol Road, qualified for the North Zone Championship of the Indian Table Tennis Federation to be held in Mohali and Panchkula. Jennifer’s top eight spots in the U-15, U-19 and Women’s groups helped secure the spot for the zonal competitions. In the 83rd State Championship in Nashik, Jennifer was placed third in the U-19 girls’ singles category and was not placed in the women’s group.

In the last eight Under-19 games, Jennifer suffered a 3-4 loss to Vidhi Shah of the Suburban District TT Association. Despite the loss in the Under-19s, Jennifer surprised all categories of women by beating seventh seed Manasi Chiplunkar of Mumbai City 4-2 and securing a medal for Nagpur. In the semifinals, however, Jennifer battled Vidhi Shah in seven thrilling 3-4 matches. Jennifer’s coach Ujwal Wani was happy with her overall show.
