The Davis Cup is the premier international team tennis event. The winning team is called the “World Champion Team” and the event organizers call it the “Tennis World Cup”.

As a challenge between the United States and Great Britain, the rivalry began in 1900. Teams from 135 different countries have faced each other as of 2016.

The World Group, made up of the top 18 national teams, hosts the Davis Cup competition each year. The three regional zones (Americas, Asia/Oceania and Europe/Africa) are those where nations that do not belong to the World Group participate. Throughout the year, the competition is spread over four weekends. The best of five matches is played in each elimination round between competing nations, which takes place in one of the countries (4 singles, 1 double). Prior to each tournament, the ITF selects the hosts for each reasonable match.

The women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup is the Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as the Fed Cup. The only nations to have won both the Davis Cup and the Fed Cup in the same calendar year are Australia, Russia, the Czech Republic and the United States.
