Montesino wins player of the week
After an 8-1 week for Azusa Pacific softball, Aly Montesino was named PacWest Player of the Week for the first time this season. Montesino has started all nine games for the Cougars, helping them improve to 28-14 this season as they have won 16 of their last 18 games. The Cougars are 18-6 in conference, which puts them firmly in second place in the conference behind Concordia (24-0) and ahead of Biola (13-9).
Over the nine games, Montesino went 13 for 29 at the plate, which included one home run, five doubles, eight RBIs and five runs scored. After beating .448 on the week, Montesino upped his season average from .336 to .353. She’s tied for the team lead in home runs with six and is second on the team in RBIs with 30. Montesino also pitched 12 innings for the Cougars, allowing eight earned runs but notching a pair of wins. against Chaminade and Stanislaus State.
In the Cougars’ extra-innings win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, Montesino’s RBI double started the 10th inning rally before Summer quinones took him out a few batters later. Montesino also hit in a pair of runs with a double and a single in his first two at bats to help his team to a 9-3 win over Cal Poly Humboldt to close out the Tournament of Champions on Saturday.
Following: Azusa Pacific played 19 games in 15 days and will enjoy a two-week break before returning to the field for their final home games of the season.
