Nigeria: 53rd Asoju Oba Molade Okoya-Thomas Cup to serve on December 1
Africa’s oldest table tennis tournament, the annual Asoju Oba Molade Okoya-Thomas Cup kicks off on December 1 in the indoor hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
The tournament which has continuously produced talent for the country will have female players competing in nine events this year with Bose Odusanya aiming to surpass her record in women’s singles.
Speaking at the press conference to announce the start of the tournament, Deji Okoya-Thomas said the tournament’s valuable contribution could not be underestimated.
âIf there was any doubt about the value that this championship has brought to table tennis in Nigeria, just take a look at the story of Olajide Omotayo, the winner of the 45th edition of the men’s singles, who took away a new car.
âHe is now a member of the Nigeria men’s table tennis team and champion of the 2019 African Games. He started by competing in the Cadet category of the Championship, moved up to the Junior category and up to the Senior category. . He is currently playing professionally. in France. He is one of many who have used this competition as a platform for a successful career, âsaid Okoya-Thomas.
For this year, he said, âWe are grateful to God that as a family God has made it possible for us, through His blessings, to continue the sponsorship. We are still in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, so we will have a number of titles to compete for. “
With this in mind, nine titles will be contested this year and they, singles (men and women), doubles (men and women), mixed doubles, standing single paras (men and women), single seated paras (men and women).
The 53rd edition of the championship will take place this year from December 1 to 7.
