Plans underway for National Junior Table Tennis Championship – Guyana newsroom
The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) is streamlining its plans to start the National Junior Championship on Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.
The GTTA and the fixtures committee are still in discussion regarding the schedule of events, but based on the preliminary itinerary, the plan is to have action from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The action will continue on Sunday and then the following Saturday, to allow for limited capacity in the sports hall in accordance with COVID-19 protocols.
According to GTTA President Godfrey Munroe, the tournament will have doubles, as well as singles in the under-15 and under-19 divisions for boys and girls.
After the junior championship ends on January 29, the plan is to start the seniors the next day.
The important aspect of this championship is that it is the baseline for the selection of national teams in 2022 from the point of view that apart from the winners, those who finish below could be chosen for tours or programs of development organized by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).
This means that now the GTTA, based on the results of the national championships, can decide which player belongs to these categories and bring a more structured system for team selection.
