Season Preview: Men’s Soccer – Pacific University Athletics
FOREST GROVE, Oregon- The Pacific men’s soccer team will feature a wide range of young talent under the guidance of the head coach Brandon porter, who is in his first full season at the helm of the Boxers.
“With a good mix of experienced ghosts and an influx of talent and young people with this great group of newcomers, we are cautiously optimistic for the fall season,” Porter said. “We believe this season will lay the groundwork for the forward momentum of our men’s football program, and we are delighted to face off against a very deep and talented Northwest Conference. We intend to bring back a deep sense of pride in Boxer Soccer and competing in style. “
In 2019, the team’s last full competitive season, the Boxers were 3-12-4. Pacific has six points in eight games on the shortened spring 2021 schedule, dropping from 2 to 6.
Pacific will be relying heavily on the incoming class to make an impact during this campaign, as 20 newcomers will join the team. The Boxers are also blessed with a lot of experience, with a seasoned squad of 10 returlers to fill very important positions alongside Porter.
Back to lead his team forward is the Boxers’ top scorer in 2019, Nico Allen (Junior / Sierra Vista, AZ). The junior has three goals, a team high in the team’s last full season. If Porter chooses a taller attacker, Jared debban (Sophomore / Tigard, OR) will be an option to bring a physical presence to the post. Cooper sheakley (Freshman / Happy Valley, OR) another athlete with a great frame, is a target man who will look to be on the scoresheet early in his career in the Pacific.
Sam altman (Sophomore / Portland, OR), Bryce Brown (Freshman / West Linn, OR), and Carson Schönwald (Freshman / Lake Stevens, WA) will be wearing red and black for the first time and complement boxers’ punch.
Pacific to bring some top executives back to midfield as captain Lucas muller (Senior / Independence, OR) will use his high capacity in the future to get involved in the attack. Muller has found the back of the net once in 2019, making eight starts while appearing in 13 games. He will be accompanied by a senior colleague Cade Taniguchi (Senior / Kula, HI), who started all 18 games in 2019.
Jericho Lara (Junior / Makawao, HI) is a very technical player who will be looking to create some rhythm in the Pacific attack with his passing ability. The junior collected an assist during the 2019 season. Joey musto (Junior / Makawao, HI) rounds out the returning midfield set, giving Porter more experienced options in midfield.
The Boxers have seasoned defenders who will anchor the backline. Captain Alex pasmann (Senior / Salt Lake City, UT) started all 18 games as a centerback in Pacific’s last full season. He will be a vocal and physical leader on the pitch and will be essential to the team’s success this fall. Conor Barrès (Junior / Eureka, CA) will likely complete the center pair as the only other returning defenseman. Barres made six appearances and one start in 2019.
Tait Kuchenbrod (Freshman / Missoula, MT) and Tyson balleza (Freshman / San Ramon, CA) are very talented wingers who will give the Boxers pace and breadth. The duo will advance and try to spot dominant Pacific attackers in the penalty area, giving the Boxers dangerous attacking options down the flanks.
Pacific will have four goalies competing for the starting point between the posts. Cole stritzke (Junior / McMinnville, OR) and Connor matto (Sophomore / Beaverton, OR) return for their second season in Red and Black while freshmen Zacharie Aderinto (Freshman / Kailua-Kona, HI) and Luis Rojas-Celis (Freshman / Redwood City, CA) is looking to help with the goal.
The Boxers will host a pre-season tune-up on August 29 at 12 p.m. when Walla Walla University heads to Hanson Stadium for an exhibition match. Pacific will officially kick off its season on September 2 at 7 p.m. when Multnomah visits Forest Grove.
