Tennis: Qatar’s Nawaf reaches semi-finals at GCC Games in Kuwait
Qatar’s Rashed Nawaf advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s singles tennis event at the GCC Games, beating home player Ali Al Shati 6-4, 6-4 at Sheikh Jaber Al Abdullah International Tennis Complex in Kuwait yesterday.
As Nawaf progressed through the event, the rest of the Qatari players withdrew from the contest after suffering defeats in their respective quarter-finals.
Qatar’s Mousa Shannan was beaten by Kuwait’s Essa Qabazard 6-3, 6-3 while Saudi Ammar Alhogbani beat Isa Shannan 6-0, 6-2.
Mubarak Shannan was ousted by Kuwaiti Abdulhamid Mubarak in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).
Meanwhile, Qatar continued their strong showing in the men’s team table tennis event, beating Kuwait 3-0 for their third consecutive victory.
Qatari paddlers also beat Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates with identical score lines on Sunday.
In the women’s individual road race, Qatar’s Noor Al Jaber finished 11th yesterday.
Qatar is third in the GCC Games standings with a total of 39 medals including 12 gold, 15 silver and 12 bronze.
Kuwait is currently in the lead with 22 gold, 19 silver and 19 bronze, followed by Bahrain, which has won a total of 46 medals including 17 gold, 17 silver and 12 bronze.
