The Maritzburg College boys put on a good show

Last weekend, Maritzburg College hosted the Nashua 7s tournament with 10 schools participating. The College’s U18 and U15 teams both qualified for the final, narrowly losing to Hilton and Westville respectively. The College Football 1st XI won the Cowie Cup in a final played against Carter and narrowly lost to Hilton in the PMB FA Cup semi-final.

The College 1st XI cricket team took part in the St David’s Festival, drawing their two games, with very good performances from the whole team. The basketball and canoe polo teams also performed well over the weekend.

Rugby 7s

The Nashua 7 took place on Saturday with 12 teams from 10 participating schools. The College U18 A team had a great tournament qualifying for the final before losing to Hilton College 17-19.

College faced Westville in the semi-finals and showed great character and heart to beat the visitors 26-12. The other semi-final saw Hilton beat DHS 17-12 to advance to the Cup final.


Maritzburg College’s 1st XI participated in the Cowie Cup, which is KZNHSFA’s knockout tournament for under-19s. The tournament was a knockout format and started with 32 teams from across KZN. This resulted in an all-PMB final with College and Carter facing off against each other.

A lottery was conducted to determine the venue and Goldstones was selected as the venue. In a hard-fought game, College emerged victorious, with a 1-0 victory thanks to a breakaway goal from Grayson Mentory. The cup was lifted by College captain Luphiwe Mdletye as the College were crowned champions for 2022.


The College’s 1st XI took part in the St David’s Festival, with two games played; against KES and St Stithians.

It was a very good performance by the whole team in both games with excellent hitters; van Zyl (91 and 166*), Jacobs (89 and player of the match) and Quin (70 from 64 balls), which bodes well for the coming season.

Canoe Polo

The College took part in the Canoe Polo Schools League event last weekend at the UKZN Pool. College A team placed 2nd College B team placed 3rd


College faced Kearsney in the Winter Championship game over the weekend, winning their match 58-45.

Table tennis

Three boys from the College have been selected to represent Umgungundlovu at the South African Table Tennis Championship which will take place in Durban from October 1-5. Seniors: E Naidoo U15: S Redlinghuys, T Royappen.
