UAAP: UST leads men’s table tennis

MANILA, Philippines — The University of Santo Tomas (UST) relied on the clutch experience of super senior Alvin Sevilla to overpower the University of the Philippines (UP), 3-1, and complete a draw at three on Day 1 of the UAAP 85 Season Collegiate Table Tennis Tournament, Sunday at Makati Coliseum.

Meanwhile, De La Salle University and Far Eastern University have taken the lead on the women’s side as both hold win-loss records of 3-0.

The Tiger Paddlers, looking for three peats, also took care of Eastern University (UE) and Ateneo de Manila University after a first draw and before defeating the Fighting Maroons.

Sevilla needed to fend off a first-set backhand to stop UP’s Benz Florida, 14-16, 12-10, 11-8, 11-9, in the third singles game.

“Stay focused lang. Focus again on championship lang kami sa goal namin na makuha ‘yung. Back to zero lang ulit, walang standing. Magtrabaho lang uli,” Sevilla shared on the mindset of the crew.

The Blue Eagles sit second in the men’s division with a 3-1 win-loss record after wins over Adamson University, Far Eastern University (FEU) and EU in that one loss facing the UST.

The Soaring Falcons follow suit at 2-1, while the Fighting Maroons currently round out the top four at 2-2.

The defending UST women’s champion and her season 82 runner-up Ateneo are behind leaders Lady Green Paddlers and Lady Tamaraws.

UST Lady Paddlers suffered a 1-3 defeat from La Salle, while the Blue Eagles lost a narrow loss to FEU at 2-3.

Lady Tamaraw Reshma Bagongon came from behind two games to snatch victory over Ateneo’s Ana Calvo, 6-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-7, in the deciding singles match.

The first round of eliminations will take place on Monday, with UST looking to stay the course on the men’s side, while La Salle and FEU lock down the guns on the women’s side.

Meanwhile, in the junior division, De La Salle-Zobel kicked off the defense of her girls’ and boys’ title, also on Sunday at the same venue.

The Junior Green Paddlers swept their day one assignments to go 3-0 for the first lead. The defending champions needed just three matches in all of the day’s fixtures to win against UP Integrated School (UPIS), Ateneo High School and Adamson.

Carlos Docto and Gabriel Ravanzo and ended Zobel’s thrilling day with a marathon 11-5, 11-6, 11-13, 5-11, 11-6 ahead of Nichol Lozano and Bnedict Rabaya of Adamson in the doubles match .

On the other hand, Junior Lady Green Paddlers completed a similar 3-0 sweep on the day without losing a single game to enter pole position after Day 1 with wins over Ateneo, UPIS and UE.

Juliliana Yamson and Kimberly Amandy needed four sets to dispatch UE’s Resala Balamal and Paula Dela Cruz, 11-13, 11-3, 11-7, 11-6, to complete the day’s sweep for Zobel.

UST picked up two wins on the day for a 2-0 record in the boys’ division, while UE are half a tie behind at 2-1. Adamson was the other school to bag an opening day victory.

On the girls’ side, UST are also 2-0, while Adamson and UE followed with win-loss records of 2-1 and 1-2, respectively.
