Wheelchair tennis players seek sponsorship to attend Kenya championship

Three wheelchair tennis players have applied for sponsorship to participate in the International Wheelchair Tennis Championship, which will take place in Kenya in February.

The Kenya championship will serve as a qualifier for the Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) Paribas World Team Cup, which kicks off on March 17, 2022 in Istanbul, Turkey.

The wheelchair tennis players are William-Terlumun Ukari, Wasiu Yusuf and Dorcas-Foluke Shodeinde.

Mr Ukari told the Nigeria News Agency (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja that each player would need at least 1.5 million naira for airfare and entrance fees.

He urged the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, private organizations and philanthropists to help fund the trip.

“We haven’t been able to meet some of the championships due to lack of funds; this time, we invite private companies, philanthropists and sports fans to support us.

“This is the only job we have and we have to go to some of these international events to surpass our level.

“We are fathers and mothers in our families and we need to bring food to the table to feed our families, we need help, we need support, we need sponsors,” lamented Mr. Ukari.

He said the entrance fee for each player is $ 350 while the plane ticket is N 380,000 per player.

The Nairobi Wheelchair Tennis Open will be held from February 28 to March 10, 2022.
