Women’s tennis split weekend matches with University of San Francisco and Pacific

Cal Poly Women’s Tennis split its two weekend matches against the University of San Francisco on Saturday, March 5 and the University of the Pacific on Sunday, March 6.

The Mustangs (6-4, 2-0 Big West) lost 2-4 Saturday to the University of San Francisco and won 5-2 Sunday against Pacific.

Saturday vs University of San Francisco

The Mustangs opened play on Saturday losing the doubles point, despite a dominating 6-1 victory by the No. 1 duo of redshirt juniors Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu.

After Ackerman and Bhunu, the Mustangs fell in matchups No. 2 and No. 3 to give the Dons the double point.

In singles, Ackerman finished first with a 7-5, 6-3 victory to tie the match 1-1.

Redshirt sophomore Melissa LaMette fell 7-6, (7-2), 6-1 in singles, followed by graduate Laura Bente, who lost in three sets 6-4, 6-2 , 6-1.

Redshirt sophomore Delanie Dunkle was also unsuccessful in her singles match while her sister, rookie Peyton Dunkle, saw her match unfinished.

At the top, Bhunu won in straight sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to end the day and improve her personal best to 6-5.

Sunday against Pacific

The Mustangs won 5-2 in Game 2 of the weekend against Pacific in Stockton.

In doubles, the No. 1 duo of Ackerman and Bhunu won again, 6-1, making it four in a row for the duo. Ackerman and Bhunu are 8-4 together this season, best on the team.

The point was taken by freshmen Eliza Bates and Peyton Dunkle in third place, who won 6-2. LaMette and Delanie Dunkle’s final duet remained unfinished.

In singles, Bente lost 6-2, 6-0, but Delanie Dunkle followed with a dominating victory, 6-1, 6-3.

LaMette (7-5) extended Cal Poly’s 3-1 lead to third place, where it won 6-1, 6-3. Peyton Dunkle took the sixth-place win, 6-4, 6-1, and No. 1 Bhunu picked up another win in straight sets, 5-7, 6-1, 11-9.

Cal Poly has won the last three matchups against Pacific.

The Mustangs have an extended break until their doubleheader against Seattle University and Fresno Pacific on Sunday, March 20 at Mustang Tennis Complex.
